Time for your links this morning. Let’s get to them.
Starting with Neil Best of Newsday, he has a column regarding the TV and radio calls of Barry Bonds’ 756th home run. Best says everyone from Jon Miller on KNBR to Dave O’Brien on ESPN2 called the shot right down the middle. Larry Stewart of Newsday’s sister newspaper, the Los Angeles Times says the ratings for ESPN2 Tuesday night grew as word of Bonds’ homer spread.
The Big Ten Network held a conference call with several newspapers on Wednesday. Here are some links dedicated to that. Andrew Kroeckel of the Pocono (PA) Record says the Big Ten Network will be one stop shopping for fans of the conference. Mark Monroe of the Toledo (OH) Blade reports that BTN feels it will have offerings not found on any other outlet. Ryan Suchomel of the Iowa City Press-Citizen says BTN will give fans plenty of angles from their favorite schools. In the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Doug Lesmeries says the network will give viewers a lot to watch. Mike Downey of the Chicago Tribune has a tongue-in-cheek look at the first week of programming for the Big Ten Network.
Jim Williams of the DC/Baltimore Examiner says the David Beckham Will He Play or Won’t He Play Tour comes to the DC area tonight and ESPN2 will have the action or inaction. Dave O’Brien has been assigned to call the game, but since the Red Sox are off and will be in Baltimore tomorrow night, perhaps he’ll be back in the radio booth for the weekend series against the Orioles.
Congratulations to former Pawtucket Red Sox announcer Dave Flemming who will be the radio announcer for Stanford football this fall. Darren Sabedra of the San Jose Mercury News says Flemming will call all but three games as they conflict with his duties with the San Francisco Giants.
The PGA Championship is online right now. It will have coverage of certain groups throughout the day and also simulcast TNT starting at 1 p.m. ET.
ESPN has announced the field for both the men’s and women’s Jimmy V Basketball Classic in December.
Richard Sandomir of the New York Times says trying to grab a record breaking home run ball in the stands can be dangerous business as Matt Murphy found out on Tuesday.
That’s it for now. I’ll be back with more later.
