Thursday Links – Tiger Woods to Hold News Conference, Urban Meyer Bashes Reporter, & Arthur Ray Jr. to Play for MSU After Battle With Cancer

Hot Tub Time Machine is in theaters tomorrow. Yes, I think it looks awesome. No, you cannot convince me otherwise. Regardless, I’m still too broke to go see it. Check the links, yo.

  • Tiger Woods will hold a news conference on April 5th, the Monday before the Masters kicks tees off at Augusta. A lot of fans and sportswriters are hoping that this will be Tiger’s version of the A-Rod tell-all press conference, but I don’t think it will go down like that. These writers/journalists/whatever will go after Tiger more aggressively than Jenni Carlson tore into Bobby Reid, and we all remember how that turned out. Note: the second link is to an article by Tom Friend, one of ESPN’s best, about the aftermath of that incident.
  • ESPN’s Elizabeth Merrill wrote a great article yesterday about Ndamukong Suh and his life growing up. I’ve been praying for Suh’s name to be called second on draft day for some time now, and the article paints Suh as the type of guy that Detroit fans would really attach themselves to. Sam Bradford, you better keep impressing the Rams.
  • There was a pretty good conversation at Bless You Boys yesterday about the trade that sent Tigers P prospect Jair Jurrjens to Atlanta for SS Edgar Renteria, who we all know turned out to be a major bust in his lone year in Detroit. Big Al also draws back on another trade between the Tigers and Braves in the 1980s involving a young John Smoltz. Great stuff from Al and the BYB community.
  • A D4L “what up” (or respectful tip of the cap, if that’s your thing) goes to Isaac (who you may recognize from Guyism) for this link: Arthur Ray Jr., a highly-touted offensive line recruit, will finally suit up for Michigan State this fall after a two year battle with bone tumors in his legs. Frequent readers know I’m not a big State fan, but I sincerely hope Ray succeeds at MSU after what he’s been through.
  • Now that the Pistons are in full-fledged tank mode, fans are wondering who the ‘Stons are going to draft. I like the popular opinion at Detroit Bad Boys that DeMarcus Cousins and Cole Aldrich are the two best options for Detroit going forward. With Malice, Bloguin’s excellent L.A. Lakers blog, looks at the thought process behind each lottery team were they to get the #1 overall pick in this year’s draft. Great stuff all around.
  • The guys over at Thunder Treats want to know: what is the best job in sports? And by best job, they mean the job where you do the least amount of work and get paid the most amount of money. An MLB closer is a good call by Zwilly, but I’d go with NFL punter any day of the week.

Does this look hard to you? (TWSS)
  • If a college guy chugging six beers is impressive, this is downright unreal. Seriously, could you imagine your gammy pounding out a keg stand? Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Rob’s Highlight of the Day

Josh Smith is no stranger to highlight-reel dunks, but this one made the cut for another reason. Smith’s one-handed putback dunk wasn’t just sick, it gave the Hawks an 86-84 win over the Orlando Magic.
