No, a rabid, escaped tiger did not attack college basketball players this past weekend at the Elite Eight (although that would have helped the TV ratings, to be sure). Rather, Tiger Woods strong performance at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last weekend (which he ended up winning) took a bite out of the NCAA Tournament’s TV ratings. While the PGA tour tournament’s ratings were up 129% from last year’s, the Elite Eight’s was down over 20%.
Overall this year’s edition of March Madness is down 9% in the ratings from last year’s, but it is up 5% over 2010’s. Kentucky steamrolling the competition, combined with no real underdogs left for the casual fan to root for, probably hasn’t done much to help draw viewers to their televisions.
