The Red Sox had AAA Allen Webster on the mound vs. 10-0 Tigers starter Max Scherzer, so it wasn't exactly a fair fight. Webster faltered in the first and then settled down, but the damage had already been done.
Allen Webster was making his third major league start last night and it would end up being his second major league loss. I imagine seasoned pitchers sweat just thinking about the middle of the Tigers lineup, let alone a guy who usually throws in AAA. The Sox bats gave Webster two runs in the first with Ellsbury scoring when Pedey hit into a double play and then Papi hit his 16th HR of the season, but Webster wouldn't leave the first still having a lead. The Tigers had the bases loaded against Webster with no outs. Webster got Fielder to strike out, but he wouldn't be as lucky against VMart. Martinez hit a grand slam off his former team to have the Tigers leading 4-2.
Webster would settle down and not give up another run until the 4th inning. Webster gave up an RBI single to Jackson to have the Tigers leading 5-2. Webster got one out in the 5th and Farrell pulled him in favor of Franklin Morales. With Morales in the game, it went from bad to worse. Morales gave up RBI singles to VMart and Peralta. Sox 2-7. The in the 7th Morales gave up a 2 run HR to Infante and then left the game with an apparent shoulder injury. Ugh. Alex Wilson came out in relief of Morales. In the 8th Wilson had the bases loaded with no outs. Wilson got Prince Fielder to ground into a double play like he wanted, but it still meant a run scored. Sox 2-10. In the 9th the Sox got their 3rd run when Salty hit an RBI single, but they still were easily outmatched during the 9 innings of play.
Red Sox 3 Tigers 10 BOXSCORE
WP: Scherzer (11-0) LP: Webster (0-2)
