I am perfectly okay with Darelle Revis holding out for the entire season. I would be even more okay with him being traded to the NFC. For now, his holdout will have to do.
However, I don’t understand what he thinks he is accomplishing by staying away from Jets training camp. I got it, he is proving that he is a typical selfish athlete who thinks the parts are greater than the whole.
News flash Darelle, you have three years left on your contract that had $11 million guaranteed and a total of $30 million. You mean to tell me that making roughly $4 million per year isn’t enough for you? I am assuming he didn’t reach all of his escalators, so his total take from the contract will likely fall in the $20 million range. That is nothing short of embarrassing, if you ask me.
Sure, Revis is the best cornerback in the NFL, but he signed a contract. I guess they don’t teach a class at Pitt about honoring contracts. If there isn’t a good case for establishing a rookie salary cap then I don’t know what a better one could possibly be.
It is one scenario that the NHL knocked out of the park. As a rookie in the NHL your entry-level deal can only span three years and there is a maximum salary you can earn. Why not put that exact stipulation in the NFL CBA? Lets talk hypothetically for a moment; the new NFL CBA could have rookie contracts capped at five years with a maximum of $2 million per season. That would mean the most a rookie could sign for out of college would be five years for $10 million. I think you would be hard pressed to find someone who could turn down $2 million a season. Hell, I would take 1/4 of that.
The beauty of this is that the players are still protected, sort of. They can’t rake the team over the coals while holding out, but they could take a two-year deal and then hit the jackpot after. Mr. Revis would be in a perfect spot right now. He could have taken a three-year deal, made a pretty penny and then cash in as the richest corner in the history of the NFL.
Instead, he is going to try to ask for more money while he is still under contract for THREE MORE SEASONS. I don’t understand why he can’t suck it up. If he continues to be ultra outstanding, he can make even more money. But, if he really doesn’t want his salary for this season I would be happy to take it off his hands. I could really use a new set of golf clubs.
Of course, this has allowed that jackass, Rex Ryan to spew off at every chance he gets about how great his team is. I have news for you Rex, no one cares how great a defensive mind you are because you look, act and sound like an asshole (pardon my French).
Why can’t these guys go to work, do their jobs and act like they have an education when they get interviewed? Is that too much to ask? Instead we get to hear Coach Ryan say how great a team he has and how he expects nothing more than a Super Bowl victory.
I really hate Bill Belichick, but at least he keeps his mouth shut most of the time.
