Titans’ GM: Top pick drawing more trade interest

The Titans have the top pick in the 2016 NFL draft, which makes them like a kid who gets more and more friends because he has a pretty sister.

Titans general manager Jon Robinson told The Tennessean that he’s fielding more inquiries from teams about trading up for the No. 1 pick.

“I would say the interest has increased some. I wouldn’t say there are 31 teams calling, but there are certainly teams that have interest in moving up,” Robinson said.

It’s been a while since there has been a trade involving the first pick, not counting the Eli Manning-Philip Rivers deal in 2004.

The last time a team traded up to No. 1 before the pick was made was 2001, when the Falcons traded the fifth pick to the Chargers to draft Michael Vick, according to Football Perspective. San Diego used the No. 5 pick on LaDainian Tomlinson and also received a third-round pick (Tay Cody) and a second-rounder the following season (Reche Caldwell).

The Rams made out pretty well in 1997 when they moved from No. 6 to No. 1 to draft Orlando Pace. The picks the Jets acquired were used on Dan Neil, Terry Day and Koy Detmer.

If any team trades with the Titans for the top pick, they might want to remember that Ki-Jana Carter and Jeff George also were chosen first overall after trades.

Most mock drafts have Mississippi offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil going to the Titans at No. 1. Unless a team really wants Tunsil or fears the Titans might pick the player they want, they might want to instead call the Browns to see about the No. 2 pick. A team wouldn’t have to give up as much to move to No. 2.
