As Tennessee Titan fans, we are pretty familiar with former first round QB Byron Leftwich. As a member of the Jaguars, the Titans faced “Lefty” on a routine basis. Last year, the Titans went against Leftwich during last season’s victory over the Falcons.
Later this week, the Titans will take another look at Leftwich, but this time, it won’t be as an opposing player: he’s visiting the Titans as a free agent in search of an employer.
Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean is reporting that Leftwich will be at Baptist Sports Park later this week as the Titans continue to evaluate potential free agents who could be considered if an injury arises.
I admired Leftwich as a collegian during his days at Marshall. His gritty performance in one game while playing on a broken leg was impressive, and as a first round selection of the Jags in 2003, I thought that he would be a Titan-nemesis for years to come.
Of course, the emergence of David Garrard was the reason why Leftwich’s days were numbered in Jacksonville in a controversial but ultimately, correct decision by coach Jack Del Rio to pull the plug on Byron’s status as their starting qb.
Leftwich is extremely immobile with piss-poor mechanics but does have a big arm and could thrive in an offense with a strong offensive line. I’d like him as a backup and at the relatively young age of 28, there’s no guarantee that his days as a starter in this league are over.
Of course, he isn’t going to start in Tennessee and at this time, there are 31 other teams in the NFL who feel the same way towards his ability to start or hold the clipboard for their franchises.
Would Byron be a good fit as a backup in Nashville?
