The first week of training camp is officially history. After pounding each other to the point of oblivion, the Titans will have the opportunity to beat up on an opposing team starting on Wednesday.
The Titans and Rams will go up against one another in practice for two days and on Saturday night under the bright lights of LP Field, live NFL action returns to Nashville as the Titans host the Rams in their first preseason game of 2008.
Despite playing in opposite conferences, the Titans and the Rams share a bit of history. As we all know, the two franchises faced off against one another in one of the greatest Super Bowls ever, with the Titans coming up just short in their 23-16 loss to St. Louis.
This week’s encounters with the Rams are a lot less significant than the contest that took place on that cold, January, 2000 day. However, this week’s battles carry their own level of importance.
For rookies such as Chris Johnson, Jason Jones, William Hayes etc., this will be their first opportunity to crack helmets with players from an opposing team. This is their first shot to prove that they are worthy of their draft spots and that they belong in the NFL.
For guys such as Paul Williams and Leroy Harris, this week will be an opportunity to showcase what they’ve learned with one NFL season in the books as well as a glimpse into what their second seasons in the league have in store for them.
Vince Young will finally face an opposing defense as he attempts to learn Mike Heimerdinger’s offense. Young has had his share of ups and downs throughout camp thus far, and hopefully, he will display some progress as he attempts to comeback from a less than impressive 2007 season.
May the injury bug stay away and the Titans have a great week against the Rams!
