For the Redskins, the big news is probably at running back, where Ryan Torain is out and anointed Clinton Portis as the starter. As Anthony Brown noted in our Q&A, Portis is by far the superior pass-blocker, where the Redskins need help the most. If right tackle Jammal Brown is unable to go, Jason Babin could be in for another big day. The other name to watch is Brandon Banks, who’s primarily the kick returner. The Titans’ biggest weakness on special teams this year has been their occasional problem containing opposing kick returners, and Banks is a good one.
For the Titans, the biggest news is by far that Craig Stevens had knee surgery and will be out for a couple weeks. I wrote about the Titans’ struggles in the run game on the edge last month, and one of the players I highlighted was Bo Scaife. Casually speaking, it seems that Mike Heimerdinger agreed with me. The last couple weeks, the in-line tight end has very frequently been Craig Stevens, who’s a far better blocker than Bo. Bo, meanwhile, has played in-line almost exclusively in two tight end sets or in obvious passing downs, and more frequently has lined up as an H-back in a wing position or in the slot. Even if Redskins DC Jim Haslett does react strongly by doubling Moss, don’t be surprised to see CJ struggle trying to get the edge. Oh, and hope Vince Young doesn’t get hurt, as I trust no sixth-round rookie who’s never taken an NFL snap. Don’t be too surprised to see Kerry Collins get the nod as the 3rd quarterback and come in just to take snaps and hand off if VY is ruled out for the game.
