The Tennessean‘s Bryan Mullen is reporting the Titans have signed free agent defensive end Jason Babin to a one-year, $1 million offer sheet.
The good news is the Philadelphia Eagles have the right of first refusal and have one week to match the offer. The bad news is they probably won’t.
Thomas Jackson and Alex Whiteleather of Eagles’ Eye gave us this report on Babin after he visited with the Titans two weeks ago:
“At 6-3 and 270, Babin fills a lot of space, but he does not have the great quickness or hops to make him your full-time speed rusher. Babin was brought to the Eagles as a free agent last summer, essentially as a ‘camp body’ to stir up some competition. He did so well in preseason games they had to keep him! He could be a bargain for the Titans as a situational pass rusher. To be honest, though, his 2.5 sacks in a part-time role came in garbage time at the end of games already decided.”
I’ve got to admit I’m underwhelmed by this signing. The only thing that appeases me a little is knowing Jim Washburn is his position coach.
Babin’s journeyman career includes stops with Houston, Seattle and Philadelphia. Most Titans fans will remember him from the 2004 draft, when the Texans traded up with the Titans to select Babin in the first round. Tennessee received four draft picks, which they used on Ben Troupe, Randy Starks, Bo Schobel and Jacob Bell.
Babin was benched in his second year with the Texans and eventually traded to the Seahawks. I don’t recall him ever being a factor in any Titans-Texans games.
I guess the only good things are 1) perhaps Washburn can make something out of him and 2) Babin should, if nothing else, provide some competition in training camp and perhaps raise someone else’s level of play.
