Titans TE on Derrick Henry: ‘He’s going to be a monster’

It didn’t take long for Tennessee Titans rookie running back Derrick Henry—who stands 6’3″ and weighs almost 250 pounds—to get the attention of his new teammates.

And it wasn’t because the 2015 Heisman Trophy winner brought his fancy hardware into the locker room.

“I’ve been sizing up Derrick Henry,” Walker said, via ESPN. “He’s a big dude. I might have to put him in his place early. But he’s a good dude, I’m just messing with him, giving him a hard time, because I feel like he’s going to be a monster”

Likened by some as a more athletic version of Brandon Jacobs, Henry steamrolled his way to almost 2,300 yards and 28 rushing touchdowns for Alabama in 2015. He rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns during the Crimson Tide’s win over Clemson in the National Championship Game.

Defensive end Kevin Dodd, a fellow second-round pick of the Titans, faced Henry in the title game. Now, the two will be teammates in Tennessee.

“He’s a big back and you had to wrap that man up by his legs and take him down,” Dodd said, via The Tennessean. “He’s a really good back and I’m glad he’s on my team.”

Titans center Ben Jones is similarly pleased to have Henry on the roster.

“We’ve got a grown man and I’m happy he’s on our team,” Jones said.

Henry is entering the NFL as one of the game’s biggest running backs. In fact, he is already among the game’s largest skill position players. For comparison’s sake, consider that Henry weighs more than Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly, 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman and Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor, among others. The rookie running back is roughly the same size as Broncos linebacker Von Miller.

And did we mention Henry ran the 40-yard dash in 4.54 seconds? Good luck stopping that freight train—or “monster,” as Walker so elegantly described him—once it gets moving.
