Tito Saw Warning Signs Early

Terry Francona held a closed door meeting with the team after the Sept. 6th game against the Blue Jays.  There were some things with the Red Sox performance on and off the field that concerned him.  He was experiencing frustration with the direction things were going and wanted to remind them that nothing was guaranteed.

The talk did not work.  The Red Sox lost the next five games and fell off the cliff Francona was trying to avoid.

There are two ways to look at this, either Francona has lost the respect of his players or there are some players on the team that do not have respect for the game and did not do their part to fix the problem.  I tend to believe the later.  No names or specifics were mentioned in today’s presser at Fenway but it was clear there were going to be major changes.  If the players that Tito was alluding to can be let go, retire or traded he will be back as manager next year.  If Theo and the ownership cannot get on the same page over which players to bring in and remove we could see Theo leaving town.

The Red Sox have ten days to pick up Francona’s option for next year, and a long offseason to put together a team that will make up for the disaster that was the 2011 season.
