Todd Bowles says Ryan Fitzpatrick will remain Jets’ starting QB

New York Jets v Arizona Cardinals

Todd Bowles said that Ryan Fitzpatrick will start for the Jets when they host the Ravens Sunday, according to NFL.com, even though he was pulled for Geno Smith in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s 28-3 loss at Arizona.

“Smith played (the role of) a relief pitcher,” Bowles said.

Fitzpatrick completed 16 of 31 passes for 174 yards and an interception as the Jets fell to 1-5. That one interception came in the third quarter. The Jets trailed 21-3 but finally seemed to be moving the ball, reaching the Cardinals’ 14-yard line before D.J. Swearinger picked off a Fitzpatrick pass in the end zone.

While Fitzpatrick wasn’t sacked, ESPN.com credited the Cardinals defense with eight quarterback hits.

“It definitely wasn’t Fitz’s fault. He barely had any time to throw,” Bowles said.

Smith also threw an interception in the fourth quarter. He completed four of six passes for 31 yards, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him start at some point in what’s turning out to be a lost season for the Jets.
