On the same day Al Davis was announcing Hue Jackson as the Raiders’ new head coach, the team’s former head coach was hired by the Seattle Seahawks to be their new assistant head coach and offensive line coach.
Cable was notified two days after the final game of the season that the Raiders would not be extending his contract and he was free to go. Al Davis was not happy that the team missed the playoffs despite going 6-0 in the AFC West and having their best record since 2002. He also didn’t like that Cable seemed to be excited about such a finish as Davis saw it as a disappointment.
Al Davis, in the same press conference he used to announce the Raiders’ new head man, ran Tom Cable through the mud about the supposed problems Cable caused the Raiders as well as many other issues with Cable during his time as coach. Davis said that his plan was to fire Cable before the start of the 2010 season after his alleged assault of assistant Randy Hanson and a woman accusing him of domestic abuse. He also cited the hiring of Hue Jackson as offensive coordinator as a sign Cable was not capable of being the Raiders’ head coach.
Well, all of this didn’t bother Pete Carrol in Seattle because while Al Davis was going on his anti-Cable tirade, Carrol was welcoming Cable onto his coaching staff. Jeremy Bates was fired as the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator but Cable will not be taking over for Bates. I am sure Cable’s problems as the Raiders’ play caller was something that was not lost on Carroll. Cable is good when he can focus on the offensive line. Any further responsibilities weaken his ability to perform any and all of said responsibilities.
Cable spent his high school days just northeast of Seattle and spent his playing career at University of Idaho where he later became head coach, so heading to Seattle is a homecoming of sorts for him.
It is a happy ending for everyone involved, I think. Cable gets an ideal position for himself as a coach and gets to go back home to do it; Hue Jackson gets his first head coaching job in his home state of California for the man he has always admired, Al Davis.
