CSNNE is airing a special tonight on Bill Russell called “Russell in Bronze.” I was given a preview of the show and it is absolutely a must watch for any Celtics fan.
It uses the statue just unveiled at City Hall Plaza as a jumping off point to look at Russell, his career, and his impact not only on basketball and the Celtics, but on society as a whole. The story of him returning the keys to Marion, Indiana after a restaurant refused to serve the black Celtics is fantastic. The on-the-court stuff is awesome too. The story of his relationship with Red Auerbach should be used as a manual for all management everywhere.
Pardon me for gushing just a bit, but it really just highlights how amazing a person Bill Russell is. As great as he was as a player…. and he’s one of the greatest of all time…. he was a better person.
Watch the special tonight after the Celtics-Heat game, or set your DVR’s. For those of you who are out of town, we’ll share a link when it’s posted online.
