For years, Tony Gwynn would travel I-15 to and from the ballpark.
Now, more than sixteen months after the Hall of Famer’s death, it was determined that a nearly five-mile stretch of the interstate outside of San Diego would be known as Tony Gwynn Memorial Freeway…and on Monday, it was made official.
“This is a tremendous honor for our family,” the longtime San Diego Padres outfielder’s son Tony Jr. said following the dedication ceremony. “I know he’s looking down probably cackling about having his own piece of highway. I know he would thoroughly enjoy it.”
“We just appreciate all the love, all the support we’ve been given over the past year and a half,” Gwynn’s daughter Anisha added. “We vow to keep going with our dad’s legacy.”
Gwynn spent twenty years as a member of the Padres. It was during that time, he would collect 3141 base hits and post a .338 career batting average. Following his career, he served as the head coach of the San Diego State baseball team.
On June 16, 2014, Gwynn died following a long battle with cancer. He was 54.
