Top-400 Fights of 2012: Honorable Mention

Confused as to what this is?  The FAQ is right here.  Only difference is I upped it to 400 because I’m psychotic, apparently.  In this first series, the Honorable Mentions go to fights that just missed the cut.  You’ll see many fights that were fun, but short in here that didn’t have enough meat to be fleshed out into an entire fight and thus, fight score.  Enjoy!

Peterson working a switch stance and throws a superman punch and a body kick. Hobar lands a straight left that knocks Peterson into the cage. Hobar goes for a takedown but thinks better of it. Peterson misses with spinning back fist and throws another mid kick. Front kick from Hobar as he walks his opponent down. Knee from Peterson lands and he follows up with more, but Hobar gets a takedown at the bell.

Round 2: Mid kick from Peterson and a stepping knee that’s countered with a right hook. Hobar is throwing all kinds of kicks but only leg kicks getting through. Groin kick from Hobar and time is called for a moment. Jumping front kick and superman punch from Peterson both miss. Hobar lands a head kick but slips while delivering it and uses the mistake to go for a takedown. Peterson lands several knees to the body that is getting through hard but Hobar tightens up the body lock and takes the space away.  Flying triangle from Peterson and it’s looking tight, but he’s crushed up against the cage by Hobar and can’t quite finish it. Switches to armbar and can’t get it, so flails with upkicks and goes for a leg lock.  Hobar rides it out and goes back into his opponent’s guard. Peterson tries for an armlock but Hobar stands out of it and eats an illegal upkick as his knee hasn’t left the mat yet. Ref calls time for a moment to warn Peterson and we’re back on. Stiff jab from Hobar and more leg kicks landing. Peterson looks tired and a right hand by Hobar gives him rubber legs. Peterson shoots for a takedown and rolls back to try for guard, but is stuck in bottom half. Hobar unleashes the ground and pound but gets tied up in rubber guard. Hobar breaks out and pistons his right hand into Peterson’s face as Peterson frantically looks to lock a submission up from bottom. Hobar escapes to the feet and round ends.

Round 3: Leg kick from Hobar and he catches Peterson’s return kick; Holding the leg and firing right hands into Peterson’s head before he can escape. Hobar lands a left-right hook combo and another right hook. Clinch and Peterson lands a pair of body knees before going for another flying submission, but Hobar stands up. Again, Peterson lands an illegal upkick and the ref deducts a point. Peterson runs in with wild attacks as he’ll clearly not win a decision now. Peterson lands another mid kick and Hobar catches it and hits him again like earlier in the round. Peterson escapes and starts swinging punches, landing a few rights that force Hobar to shoot. Clinch knees from both and Peterson is stalking with heavy punches. Trading and Peterson is landing more and more as Hobar appears hurt. Clinch wrestling and knees from Peterson have Hobar hurt badly. Shovel hooks and punches and Hobar is falling to pieces here. Peterson is trying to finish but is too tired and Hobar circles while clearing his head. Front kick from Hobar, and Peterson lands a punch and more clinch attacks, then misses with the fifteenth superman punch of the fight. Counter right by Hobar and a spinning backfist from Peterson misses.  Mid kick from Hobar lands and head kick from Peterson misses. Hobar is jabbing and trying to stay out of the fire fight. Two big rights from Hobar and Peterson is fading. Trading punches to the bell and both guys still seem to hate each other.

Fight: Anthony Bain vs. Mario Navarro
Result: Navarro R2 Submission (Triangle choke)

My Scorecard: N/A
Play-By-Play: (via Sherdog) Round 1:
Michigan’s Bain clinches up and tries to throw Navarro, but botches the throw and winds up on his back. The Californian quickly gets to mount as Bain tries to bridge, exposing his back. Navarro gets the back, sinks his hooks and instantly looks for a rear-naked choke. He can’t get his choking arm fully under the jaw of Bain. Bain is struggling as Navorro cranks on his chin, but he nearly escapes. Navarro establishes back mount, sinks the body triangle and goes to work working for the rear-naked choke again. He starts to come high over the back and Bain smartly turns into his guard. The suddenly-offensive Bain is all over Navorro with postured punches and elbows. Navarro swings for an armbar, but his foe extricates himself and goes back to work with more punches and elbows. Another armbar attempt, and more punishment from Navarro, who pounds away until the horn.

Round 2: Bain chops at Navarro’s legs in the early going, as Navarro is too slow to catch his leg and take him down. The local favorite gets inside and clinches again, and this time gets the trip takedown he sought in the first round. Navarro instantly frames up an armbar, but Bain stands and yanks his way out before delivering a salvo of punches. Navarro is undeterred, and continues to frame up armbars from the bottom, working a high guard. Bain continues to escape and pound away. With two minutes to go in the round, Navarro’s high guard comes up high and he surprises Bain with a triangle.

Navarro takes his time, underhooks the far arm, tightens his hips and forces to the tap. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native earns the submission win at 3:18 of the second frame.

Fight: Jesse Ronson vs. Ryan Healy
Result: Ronson UD
Judges’ Scorecard: 30-26 Ronson, 30-25 Ronson, 30-27 Ronson
My Scorecard: 29-28 Ronson
Play-By-Play: (via TopMMANews)

R1 – Ronson lands the first four strikes before Healy clinches. Ronson lands a short elbow against the cage but Healy pulls his legs out for a takedown. Ronson gets up and starts pouring it on, landing just about everything he throws. He takes Healy down and almost takes his back before ending up on the bottom. They stand. Ronson lands a left high kick and left body kick before getting bull-rushed by Healy. Ronson lands an uppercut and head kick on the break, but Healy takes him down into side control. Ronson landed the best shots but Healy landed takedowns

R2 – The body snatcher is living up to his name. He lands several body shots that stagger Healy. Healy has very little left in the tank but he still manages another takedown. As Ronson gets up, it is even clearer that Healy’s legs are hurt. Ronson staggers him with a head kick then drops him with a flying knee! Somehow Healy survives and makes it back to his feet. The crowd chants, “finish him!” but Healy survives the second.

R3 – Ronson staggers him with a right high kick and straight right hand to open the third. He is absolutely lighting Healy up. A thunderous body kick draws a huge reaction from the crowd. Healy shows huge drive and unwillingness to quit by scoring another takedown with three minutes to go. Ronson reverses to the chants of “UFC!” They stand. Ronson connects with three consecutive head kicks that no one in the building can believe Healy withstood.
