The Bearcats get back on the grind this weekend, so I thought we’d spend one more day basketball free. I kicked around some ideas, but I couldn’t really get the fire going. That means this is going to be a post full of top 5s. I know everyone likes a good list, except those who hate lists, so this should be a good time. For those of you who hate lists, and hate when I write about stupid stuff, well, come back tomorrow morning. For the rest of you, let’s look at some things. Feel free to debate me on these lists in the comments or on twitter. I try to write back to most tweets.
Top 5: Shows you should be watching
1) Parks and Rec
For my money, Parks and Rec is the funniest show on tv right now. If you watched the first like 5 or 6 episodes and thought it blew, I don’t blame you. I was ready to give up on it, but I gave it a second chance. It was one of the best tv watching decisions that I’ve ever made. It really hit it’s stride last season, and it’s continued the first couple episodes of this season. Amy Poehler, Rob Lowe, Adam Scott, Aziz Ansari, Chris Pratt and Nick Offerman kill it. Ron F’ing Swanson is one of the best characters on tv. Period.
2) Community
Like Parks and Rec, it also comes on Thursday night. Like Parks, it has a great ensemble cast, headed by Joel McHale. I think Community is my favorite, a little more than Parks and Rec. I just like all the people on Community. Donald Glover is awesome. I can see why some people get on it for the gimmicky shows and the pop culture references, but that’s not all it is. What it is, is hilarious.
3) Confessions: Animal Hoarding
Yeah, this is a complete genre switch. I saw this show at like 3 am on I think it was Friday, and it was awesome. It was unbelievably sad for the pets, but the people on it are sad too. It’s weird to watch how people justify living like a deranged zoo keeper. Back in the day, my family had a cat. It was just 1 regular cat. It started spraying for about a week. It was awful. I hated it. Now, that was just 1 cat doing that. People live with 20 dogs, and 80 cats and 30 chickens. They don’t clean up after them, which means they live in a place where all the animals do that disgusting business everywhere. I don’t know a) how you are supposed to breathe in that house, and b) where you sleep. It’s weird.
4) Pawn Stars
I think Pawn Stars is a hit, but I’m not really sure. What I do know, is that Pawn Stars has become my version of crack. There was a marathon on Sunday, I dvr’d like 10 episodes of it. I somehow watched them all by Tuesday. That’s one of those shows where you become invested for 20 minutes, and then think, I wonder what’s next. It seems that there are some scripted parts of it, but that’s alright. No one cares about that stuff. I don’t like the part where Rick looks at stuff for 5 minutes, and then says, “I don’t know enough about this, even though I just spent 10 minutes looking at it, so I’m going to call in an expert. He’s great at this stuff.” My favorite expert is old man beard/hat man. He cracks me up every time. He might be the most unintentionally hilarious guy on tv. I wish I had something to take to the shop. I think I could negotiate well on it. The key seems to be getting the price, and then the offer is half. So you start half plus 2. They won’t really try to rip you off, except the old man, and it seems to be the best strategy. I think it works out well for the person too. If you had an object that was valued at like 2,000 and took it to action, the 20% or so they take off is what, 400 bucks? Who knows what other fees you have to pay as well. If the shops offers 1,300 hundred cash, I think you have to take that. I do want to visit that shop one day though.
5) Friday Night Lights
I don’t have Direct TV, so I’m not going to talk about what’s happening now. But, the show is fantastic. Start with season 1, you can probably skip half of season 2, and then dive in with season 3. It’s a great show. The reason that I picked this one, is because it’s ending next week. The weird part, is that it comes out on dvd in April. It doesn’t start showing on NBC until a week or two after that. That just seems like a weird thing for NBC to do. I will buy the dvd when it comes out and rip apart the series. It’s one of my favorite shows of maybe all time. Clear eyes, full hearts, CAN’T LOSE.
Top 5 Apps I like on my iPhone
1) Echofon
This is a list for the lone purpose of getting people to tell me what apps to buy for my iPhone.
2) ESPN Scorecenter
I was not a fan of scorecenter before ESPN changed it a few weeks ago. I like the newer look with everything more steamlined. It’s a good place to find scores from basically everything. It doesn’t show a lot of future games though, and that’s my drawback. They need to put schedules on it.
3) Angry Birds
I downloaded the lite version to see what the fun was about, and my god is this game addictive. I actually bought the real version because I could not get enough. If you’ve played it and don’t like it, you have no soul and I hate your face.
4) Q*Rank
This is a quiz game that I heard about from Doug Benson. Not him personally, but on his twitter. You can only do 1 quiz a day, but it’s a fun thing. It’s highly addictive. I always feel like I should do better.
5) Flixster
I like going to the movies, and this is a good one to use. It has the times of everything, every theater, reviews with the rotten tomato score, and trailers for future movies. The only major ads on it can be easily ignored. I use this one quite a bit.
Top 5 podcasts
1) Adam Carolla Podcast
I know the Ace Man has the most popular podcast out there, but that’s because it’s the best. I could, and have, listened to Adam complain about everything for god knows how many hours, and it’s always entertaining. I wish I could talk about anything so easily. It’s actually something that I have tried to do. It’s good for first dates that are kinda boring and awkward. His rant on pie v. cake is classic.

2) Doug Loves Movies
If you like movies, and comedy, you will love this one. Doug is one of my favorite comedians, and even if you don’t like him, he has pretty good guests on every week. I think my favorite guest is TJ Miller. I hadn’t heard much of him before, but man, he kills me. The Len Maltin game is a great idea, and really sucks you in to it.
3) Nerdist
Another comedian podcast is the one run by Chris Hardwick. He has 1 guest a week, and it’s a good long form conversation. Plus, he’s also very funny. I remember when he hosted Singled Out. I don’t know if that makes me feel old, or makes him old. Jenny McCarthy was so hot on that show.
4) Jonah Keri
Jonah is a very good writer. That’s turned into a very good podcast. His last effort had Luke Winn, who is probably my favorite college basketball writer today. Even better than me. He also had Dan Schulman on today, which was a good listen. He’s had some very good guests in the past, like the Basketball Jones guys, Will Leitch, and Boog Sciambi, who is one of my favorite baseball announcers.
5) Art of Wrestling
As a person who likes the art of pro wres, I like this podcast by Colt Cabana. He’s a wrestler in ROH, and was in WWE for a little bit. He goes behind the scenes with some of your favorite indy workers. It’s not a pro wrestling podcast as much as it’s a life podcast. People from all walks of life have interesting stories, and some of the ones for wrestlers are out there.
Well, that’s about it folks. Throw your suggestions into the comments or on twitter. Have a nice Thursday.
