Top 5: Things the Bills have to do this offseason

1) Find a quarterback
Take a look at the playoff teams. All of them have franchise quarterbacks. If you can find that franchise quarterback then you will be competing for years to come. I don’t care if it’s through the draft or trading, but the Bills need to turn the page on Captain Check Down and Jim Breuer. Personally, I’ve had my eyes on Kevin Kolb from the Eagles. Take a look at his stats this season in relief of McNabb. Over 700 yards in two games, along with four touchdowns. I know that it’s not the biggest or most proven name out there, but fans said the same thing when the Texans traded for Matt Schaub. Kolb will most likely only cost you a 2nd rounder and he’s already been learning from a great quarterback teacher in Andy Reid. Another name I wouldn’t mind the Bills looking into is David Garrard. Pro Football Talk reported that the Jags are interested in drafting Tim Tebow to capitalize on his marketability in Florida. If that’s the case, the Bills should be lining up for Garrard’s service.

2)Find teachers
If there’s one thing I enjoyed hearing from Buddy Nix’s press conference, it’s how he talked about the importance of finding coaches who can teach players. Buddy, if you want to find good teachers, then tell your bosses that it’s time to pay for established coordinators. Take a look at the NFL coaches in the playoffs. Sean Payton has Greg Williams as his defensive coordinator, John Harbaugh has Cam Cameron as his offensive coordinator, Mike McCarthy has Dom Capers as his defensive coordinator. All former head coaches, all top tier coordinators. Enough of promoting the Alex Van Pelt’s and the Turk Schonert’s of the world. Charlies Weiss is out there, make him an offer to coach the offense. Same with Chan Gailey. If you can’t get named head coaches to come to Buffalo, then try and get named coordinators.

3) Fire John Guy and Tom Modrak
Do I really need to get into this? They duo has been god awful (Even though John Guy is the best dressed Personnel guy I’ve seen). I still think all this chatter about the Bills bringing in Thurman Thomas and Jim Kelly as consultants is like throwing pieces of steak at hungry dogs (fans) who want Guy/Modrak out of here. It’s bad enough that you decided they were amongst the finalists for the GM job, but I’m willing to forgive Wilson if he can just cut these guys off. But again, it’s Ralph Wilson who doesn’t like working with anyone he doesn’t know.

4)Everyone is for sale
So Aaron Schobel says he is thinking about retiring. Well, just in case he changes his mind, the Bills should do their best to change his uniform. That goes for Lee Evans, Brian Moorman, Marcus Stroud, Chris Kelsay & everyone else who has value. If the Bills decide to rebuild the team from the draft, then it’s no point to having guys in their 30’s on the team. If you can get a 3rd rounder for Moorman, do it. As for Lee Evans, the only guy under 30, he hasn’t lived up to his contract. If you can get a 1st and 4th rounder for Lee Evans, sorry Lee, but you’re gone. Braylon Edwards was traded this season after posting career high numbers in 2007. Evans hasn’t come close to eclipsing his break out performance in 2006. So what makes Evans untouchable? Yes, I know, it’s not all his fault. But by the time the Bills become competitive again, Evans will probably by due for a new contract.

5)Find new linebackers
Sorry, but I’m through with the Keith Ellison and converted safety era of Bills football. The guys the Bills have trotted out on the field over the last 2 years at linebacker have been a complete joke. I haven’t been high on Poz, but if he’s suppose to be this big break-out linebacker that the team hopes for, how about finding him some help. During the last decade, the Bills have only drafted one linebacker within the first three rounds of the NFL draft. That was Poz. Last year’s draft was all about reshaping the offensive line after years of neglect. This year, I think it’s time to find a young buck or two, who can run sideline to sideline.
