The Beast is on his way back!
After a brief stint back with UFC in an attempt to give UFC an actual recognizable name to market their big 200th show around, Brock Lesnar will return to his home in another high profile match to headline SummerSlam.
Word was released on Raw that Lesnar’s opponent would be announced this week on SmackDown. In what is a pretty smart move by WWE, it wasn’t announced at the SmackDown taping last night but instead was saved for the actual broadcast. No leaks means that more people watch…smart!
Some insiders say that they have heard rumors of who the opponent is and that they are calling it a “dream match.” That gets me thinking – who could it be?
When you hear “dream match” you think of top names like The Undertaker and John Cena. Brock has gone down those roads several times so I doubt we will see another installment of either of these series’.
So who could it be? Who would be big enough to garner dream match potential with Paul Heyman’s Beast? Let take a look at five possibilities.
#5 – Connor McGregor
Obviously a very far-fetched possibility, but one that could make the most sense with this new relationship between WWE and UFC.
WWE is scripted, UFC is not. Oops, sorry, um…**spoiler alert** Lesnar will be in the octagon this weekend against Mark Hunt. What if the deal is this – whatever the outcome is this weekend at UFC200, SummerSlam we get the opposite.
So let’s say Lesnar loses to a UFC star on UFC programming this weekend. To balance the power between the two promotions, a UFC star such as Connor McGregor comes to Brooklyn to face Lesnar on WWE programming and loses. Neither promotion loses momentum and both come out with more eyes on their product.
#4 – Shinsuke Nakamura
Probably the most far-fetched option for someone within the WWE Universe, but would provide an amazing match.
The two already have history. Nakamura has faced Lesnar in Japan back in the day. It would be a great way to introduce the WWE Universe that only focusses on the WWE main roster to the NXT and international superstar.
#3 – Kevin Owens
Just stop and think of what weeks of Kevin Owens vs Paul Heyman on the mic would be like! What kind of gems would we be in store for? Owens seems to be on pace for superstardom. He is amazing in the ring and has the intangibles out of the ring that s seems to captivate every member of the WWE Universe one way or another. Owens and Lesnar has to take place at some point, so why not now?
#2 – Bray Wyatt
Brock Lesnar is simply the next man on Bray Wyatt’s list. Wyatt has gone head to head with top stars like John Cena, The Undertaker and The Rock (well, sort of). Just like Lesnar and Owens, Lesnar and Wyatt has to happen! Sign me up for a month worth of Wyatt/Heyman promos anytime! It seems like Wyatt has been on the back burner for way too long! A high profiled program with a top name at the biggest show of the summer is exactly what Wyatt needs to get back into the top spot that he deserves to be in.
#1 – Randy Orton
Simply put, if it is a “dream match” that is coming our way, this is the only real option. Orton has been out since last year and has been rumored to be returning for a few months now. The latest reports have him heading to Orlando to begin working out this week in hopes for an August return.
Wait a minute – I’m pretty sure SummerSlam falls on an August this year!
The two men are part of the historic 2002 OVW class that also included Batista and John Cena. Surprisingly though, we really haven’t had too much, if any, interaction between these two future Hall of Famers.
This match is a WrestleMania level match. If WWE wants to put SummerSlam on a WrestleMania level (as it seems they do with a 4 hour run time) a match like this is needed.
The Beast vs The Viper … book it!
