Toria Douglas Talks About the Dance Team Trip to China

The UC Dance Team went to China back on Thanksgiving week for some competition. To find out all about it, I asked one of the senior captains of the dance team, Toria Douglas, some questions about how things went. You can follow the dance team on twitter at UC Dance Team.

Questions are in bold.

How did the team end up getting invited to China?

We were selected through the same company, ICU, that we represented USA for this past April in Orlando.

Were there any difficulties in traveling to China?

The trip was extremely last minute. Getting passports and visas for our team was a process, but the travel itself was not difficult, just time consuming.

What kind of competitions did you participate?

We competed in the international Jazz and Hip Hop categories along with two exhibition performances.

How many did you win?

We won both categories that we competed in. (Ed: CHAMPS)

What's it like to be on an internationally recognized dance team?

It is a huge honor being on this internationally recognized dance team. Typically collegiate dancers are not recognized for their achievements, but I feel like we get a lot of support from our peers and community here. In China we were treated like celebrities, people were constantly coming up to us and wanting pictures. It was a really cool experience. I'm grateful to be apart of this program.

Did you get to see any of the sights?

We ended up having some down time so we spent A LOT of time shopping in downtown Nanjing, bargaining was one of our favorite parts. We got to tour the Confucius Temple which was pretty cool as well.

More importantly, did anyone eat anything that would be considered disgusting?

Almost everything we were given to eat would be considered disgusting to most Americans. My teammate Ashley Roettker was the only one to try everything. Some girls tried chicken feet, chicken cartilage, fish.. as in the entire fish eye balls and all. We did get Pizza Hut for dinner one night, that was honestly one of the highlights of the trip because we were so hungry. It was like Christmas when we found American food.

What major competitions do you have coming up?

Our next competition is what we prepare for all season and that is UDA College Dance Nationals in Orlando Florida.

What exciting, I'm sure everything is exciting, things coming down the line for the dance team?

We are into the heart of our season right now with football and basketball games overlapping, then our surprise trip to China. I would say our next exciting thing is nationals in January. We will be spending all of winter break perfecting our routines so that, along with basketball games and a potential trip to a Bowl game, are what is next for us.

Huge, huge thanks to Toria for taking the time to answer my questions. Be sure to support the dance team and to follow them on twitter. They are awesome and deserve all the support they can get.
