Torts: Biron Is Part of Tandem, Not the Backup

Jesse Spector at the Sporting News takes a look at the best goaltending rotations heading into the playoffs and has this quote from John Tortorella on Marty Biron…

“I don’t look at Marty as the guy that comes in for Hank. I look at him as part of our tandem. I don’t consider him a backup. He deserves the respect of a guy that’s one of our goaltenders. That’s very important, where it’s not to get Hank rest—it is a guy that we want to come in, play and win. That’s very important if you want to get where you want to be. Your backup—I shouldn’t even say that—your other goalie cannot just come in just to spell your starter. We know Hank is our starter, he’s our No. 1 guy. But he also has to find a way to get points, and he certainly has shown that to us.”

…while Biron has been a Godsend this season, as he’s allowed Lundqvist to stay fresh physically and mentally, I have to disagree with Torts here. Biron is the backup, period. Yes, he’s had a nice season, but I don’t think there’s a Rangers fan alive who thinks Biron is anything but a guy who spells Lundqvist. I mean honestly, if God forbid Lundqvist goes down in the playoffs, would you really feel comfortable with Biron in there? Me neither.
