Last summer, we conducted a series of polls to determine an all-time Titan era team. The voting was competitive and intriguing, and at the end, this was the outcome of our efforts.
As promised, we will now take an even further trip down memory lane. Once a week over the course of the next few months, we will attempt to construct an all-time Titan/Oiler team. For those of you who yearned to acknowledge the greatness of past Oiler standouts such as Earl Campbell, Warren Moon, etc., this is your chance.
First up: the quarterback position.
Warren Moon (1984-1993)
Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006, Warren Moon spent the majority of his prolific career as a Houston Oiler. Moon passed for 33,685 yards while tossing 196 TD passes during his 10 year reign as the Oilers’ starting QB.
In his best statistical season, Moon threw for 4,689 yards and 33 TD passes in 1990. His excellent 1990 campaign also consisted of a memorable 527-yard performance against the Chiefs.
Steve McNair (1997-2005)
The signal-caller for our all-time Titan era squad, McNair defined toughness during his career in Nashville. He led his team to the cusp of a Super Bowl victory in 1999 and was voted the league’s co-MVP in 2003.
McNair ended his tenure as a Titan with a 76-55 record as starting QB while leading the team to five playoff victories. Needless to say, McNair was a winner.
George Blanda (1960-1966)
Versatility and longevity are two appropiate words to define the career of Hall of Fame QB/K George Blanda. In a career that spanned twenty-six years, the NFL’s version of Methuselah was the Oilers’ starting signal-caller for seven years.
In Houston, Blanda threw 165 TD passes while leading his team to the first two championships in the old AFL. Ironically, in 1961, Blanda’s best day as a QB came against a team known as the Titans: a 7 TD performance in a 49-13 rout of the New York Titans.
Dan Pastorini (1971-1979)
Pastorini was the Oilers’ starting quarterback for nine years. Despite possessing a horrible TD-INT ratio (96 TDs, 139 INT’s), Pastorini was the starting QB on two Oiler teams that reached the postseason: 1978,1979.
Other Titan/Oiler Quarterbacks
Ken Stabler (1980-1981)- Remembered by most for his contributions in Oakland, “The Snake” led the Oilers to a postseason birth in 1980.
Chris Chandler (1995-1996)- Also known as “Chris Chandelier“, Chandler was the caretaker for the QB position until Steve McNair was ready to man the fort. In the final two years of the franchise’s history in Houston, Chris was a steady performer while throwing 33 TD’s and 21 INT’s in 1995-1996.
Vince Young (2006-Present)- Vince set the world on fire during his rookie year, as he helped lead the Titans to a near-playoff appearance despite the team’s disastrous start. He has struggled as of late but hopefully, he still has a long career ahead of him in Tennessee.
The candidates are listed so audience, it is now your time to decide who is worthy of being the Titan/Oiler all-time QB.
