An Olympic year is always a very special one for track and field. The Nittany Lions Den will be there every step of the way: from the Olympic Marathon Trials next weekend to the closing ceremony in August.
The Penn State track and field team will kick off the indoor track season on Saturday at the Penn State Relays at the Horace Ashenfelter Indoor Track facilities in State College. Saturday will mark the start of a 6-month journey that many of the athletes will grind through. For a very select few Nittany Lions, the season will end in June at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon. And with lots of hard work and a little luck, there is always a chance that a current or former Penn Stater will get the honor to represent their country in London at the Olympic Games.
Before this exciting track season really kicks off, I’d like to catch up on a few pieces of news from the past month regarding Penn State. It’s been a while since I’ve posted, so here’s some news you may have missed:
Penn State Head Coach Beth Alford-Sullivan was the Joseph Robichaux Award winner. Coach Sullivan is often regarded as one of the best track and field coaches in the nation. You can read about her most recent award here.
Now former PSU throwing coach T.J. Crater left his position at Penn State to relocate back to his home state of Washington. He was recently hired as the new throws coach for the University of Washington. You can read about his new job with the Huskies here.
Finally, Penn State hosted the Blue/White Inter-squad meet on December 10. This meet is really just a glorified workout, but it gives athletes a chance to participate in their events in a competitive setting. You can see full results from the meet here.
I will unfortunately not be on campus Saturday to cover the Penn State Relays, but I will have a complete recap of the results later this weekend.
