In a move that was rumored for a few days now, the Angels have acquired infielder Josh Rutledge from the Colorado Rockies for relief prospect Jairo Diaz.

Rutledge was once a top Rockies prospect, but never really panned out. He’ll turn 26 right after Opening Day, but he still has some offensive upside. He’s got a bit of speed, pop and an ability to draw a walk. He just has never been able to put it together in the majors. That’s a bit concerning since he’d been playing his home games at Coors Field.
Nominally, Rutledge plays the entire infield, but he’s never graded out well defensively, especially at short. Yet that’s probably what he’ll be tasked with doing for the Halos, serving as their primary backup infielder. This isn’t a back pick up as it only cost them a decent relief prospect, Jairo Diaz, who MWAH had rated as the #8 prospect in the Angels system.
