Trade Mark Barron, Trade Doug Martin, But Tampa Bay Buccaneers shouldn’t trade Vincent Jackson

sabreswild

He was a wide receiver with a lot of speed, but he was supposed to be on the downside of his career. He was 33 and playing for the most recognized team in the country, the Dallas Cowboys. Next thing he knew, he was a Tampa Bay Buccaneer.

The Bucs were tired of mouthy disruptive Keeshawn Johnson, and basically the bucs swapped Johnson for this guy, Joey Galloway.

No, Galloway never won a Super Bowl with the Bucs. But he did lead the Bucs to their last two

"Trade Me? Your gonna trade Me?" Not smart. Trade Barron or Martin first.
“Trade Me? Your gonna trade Me?” Not smart. Trade Barron or Martin first.

playoff appearances, in 2005 and 2007, the latter of course was the last hurrah, as he was injured in a meaningless game at San Francisco- the very injury the Bucs tried to avoid.

Galloway played his best years in his mid 30s, although not in his first year which he started off with a hamstring on opening day, at Washington, stretching for a TD. But he came back that year to return a punt for a TD against the Saints. Then in 2005 he started.

2005 83 1,287 15.5 80 10
2006 62 1,057 17.0 64 7
2007 57 1,014 17.8 69 6

Supported with Cadillac Williams running game, and later Earnest Graham, Galloway was the Bucs more dangerous weapon, aged 34, 35, and finally 36, never catching less than 57 passes and eclipsing 1000 yards in three straight seasons.

Today, Vincent Jackson is being considered as trade bait because his numbers aren’t good.

The Bucs need to bypass all Vincent Jackson trade talk, because Jackson and rookie Mike Evans are going to turn into major weapons in Tampa Bay, but not if Jackson is gone.

Yes VJax has dropped some passes this year, and yes his production is down. So is the QB position, so is the RB, and the Offensive Line is a prime culprit. But this isn’t permanent, this is something the Bucs can overcome with a better run game.

Charles Sims is due to play this week, and if anything, Doug Martin should be the Buc Tampa Bay should look to move on. Martin did NOT have a great rookie season, he had a great 4 or 5 games, behind a line and with a QB who got him the ball when he had no one around him.

A great running back is one that can make something out of nothing. Mike Alstott didn’t need a hole to get a yard.  The Bucs have Bobby Rainey and Mike James to go with Sims.

Then on defense, time to drop the 7th overall pick Mark Barron who has picked off a whole 3 passes in his career. Ronnie Lott he will not be. Don’t mention John Lynch in the same sentence, and it has nothing to do with how hard you hit or can hit in the NFL any more. Its about ball hawking. Barron is not a hawk, he’s a pigeon. Or a finch.

Leave Jackson for the Bucs to settle on a  QB and build an offensive line, and he will be a part ready to go with, and the Bucs who are showing they can draft better than they can use free agency, can build from within.
