Pierre LeBrun at ESPN.com says the Rangers will be looking for a power play defenseman and/or scoring winger at the trade deadline, but isn’t sure they’ll get it done.
…with Sather not likely to part with any of the young core, I think it will be impossible for him to obtain the above mentioned needs. Expect complimentary moves.
…having said that the power play desperately needs some help.
LeBrun also adds that the Rangers have no interest in Wild defenseman Marek Zidlicky.
The 35-year-old Zidlicky has zero goals and 11 assists this season. Just two of his assists have been on the power play. He has scored double digit goals three times during his career.
…reports have Zidlicky frustrated with his role in Minnesota, but at age 35 and with zero goals this season he’s not exactly the power play quarterback the Rangers are looking for.
Finally, Nicholas J. Cotsonika at Yahoo Sports continues the Ryan Smyth to Rangers rumors by saying the Blueshirts are a team likely interested in the veteran winger.
Costonika adds that Smyth, who left open the idea of being traded, has not been approached by the Oilers about a trade and would need to approve any trade under his no trade clause.
Smyth has 16g, 20a and is in the final year if his contract that pays him $6.25 million this year.
…that’s a lot of money to pay for an aging player, but he still has some skills and could probably be acquired on the cheap. Still not sold he can help the Rangers.
