We hear all the time about “two-sport athletes” and guys that are playing professionally in one sport, but also excel in another. This got me to thinking: what if Detroit athletes played another sport? There are several guys that I would love to see try it, and I think they would probably be pretty successful.
Will Bynum, Pistons G
New position: Lions RB
Before his ankle injury, Bynum was a pure ankle-breaker on the hardwood. Given the Lions recent troubles at running back, the shifty Bynum could give them a big-time boost. He’d be a home run threat we haven’t seen in Detroit since some Barry dude played here for a bit.
Calvin Johnson, Lions WR
New position: Pistons SF
Megatron is an absolute freak of an athlete: 6’5″ 236 lbs. with 4.3 speed. Tell me he wouldn’t be able to throw down some sick dunks in the NBA. Shooting might be an issue, but the dunk contest needs more help anyway.
Jonas Jerebko, Pistons F
New position: Red Wings RW
He’s Swedish, so I’m wondering why he’s even playing for the Pistons in the first place.
Matthew Stafford, Lions QB
New position: Tigers P
Stafford has an absolute cannon for an arm, I’m betting he could probably dial up a pretty nice fastball. His curve doesn’t seem too bad either.
Brett Lebda, Red Wings D
New position: Lions CB
Lebda has a strong tendency to let offensive players get behind him and score easily. He’d be a natural fit in the Lions defensive backfield.
Jimmy Howard, Red Wings G
New position: Tigers C
Howard has been phenomenal in net for the Wings this season. Since he’s having no problems playing every day already, let’s just send him over to Comerica once the Wings’ season is over and have him backstop the Tigers to victory.
Justin Verlander, Tigers SP
New position: Pistons owner
It’s no secret that current Pistons owner Karen Davidson is looking into selling the team. Maybe with that fat new contract JV just inked, he could chip in to make sure the franchise stays in safe hands.
Ernie Sims, Lions LB
New position: Lions GM
Hey, it worked once already, right?
