Scary to think about, but we are near approaching another season and another time of change. As kids head back to school, soon parents will experience an increase in extracurricular activities and a decrease in activity as the weather changes “back to normal.”
Change is something that is intriguing to me as a fitness professional. Most people dislike change. Although there are people who are receptive to change, adjusting to new schedules and routines are challenging mentally and physically. However, the one change that most people accept is the seasonal change in food and all the goodies that go along with fall. From witch’s brew to pumpkin cookies to thanksgiving meals, we never seem to dislike the change in diet. In fact, we embrace it and are welcoming to apple cider and apple fritters.
Why is this? There is no specific answer, but watching a movie on a rainy night while sipping hot cocoa and eating homebaked treats sounds enjoyable compared to walking outside with wet shoes and achy joints.
Enjoying outdoor activities in the fall assist in keeping up the summer activity level of the summer before the full-on winter arises. Hiking to view fall foliage, taking a ski lesson or participating in a running event are simple and effective ways to stay outdoors.
If you are the type that is resistant to any outdoor activity, what can you do in the fall to keep you active for your spring and summer pursuits? Taking swim lessons, purchasing a trainer for your bike or joining a Yoga for Golfers class keep us motivated to enjoy the activities we participate in without the seasonal affective disorder.
