Nobody has hit more home runs at Target Field than Plouffe, which is a big swing from when he was originally derided as a member of the “Fun Bunch” that included Danny Valencia and Delmon Young, a group of guys that had the audacity to enjoy playing Major League Baseball. He struggled at short, and initially as a defender at third, which threatened to send him to the bench, but his glove came into form, and he became a regular.
With the emergence of Miguel Sano, a common expectation was that the Twins would try to trade Plouffe during the last season, but due to the fact that the market was soft for third basemen, as well as the fact that Plouffe had established himself as a veteran leader on a team full of young players. It didn’t work out in so many ways, for Plouffe, who was brought down by injury, and saw it made clear that the only spot for Miguel Sano was at third. Plouffe, as it sounds, recognized the need for this move as much as anyone. He is in the final year of his rookie contract, headed to arbitration. The Twins couldn’t let him go with 2 years left on his contract, but they can handle losing him for free for one year.
Plouffe will catch on. Two other members of the organization are now former members of the organization. Adam Brett Walker was claimed by the Brewers, and catcher Juan Centeno was also released.
