Terrell Suggs signed a four-year contract extension to remain a stalwart on the Baltimore Ravens defense. The former NFL defensive player of the year took a salary cap cut, in order to remain with the team and give them the option of signing better players. The Ravens created $4.6 million in cap room by lowering Suggs’ cap number from $12.4 million to $7.8 million. Suggs will receive $21 million over the first three years of the contract, which includes $16 million guaranteed.

Suggs is relatively young at 31 years old, and has only missed 11 games do to injury in his career thus far. Suggs has had an illustrious career with the ravens so far, as he has been to six Pro Bowls and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2011. He is the team’s all-time leader in sacks with 94.5 and forced fumbles with 29. Suggs started off the 2013 season very well, tallying nine sacks in his first eight games. However, he managed only 20 tackles and one sack in his final eight games. Suggs discussed the lack of production in the second half of the season stating, “”I think I was probably trying to do too much. As one game went by and two games went by, it was like, ‘I need to get a sack, I need to get a sack.’ I stopped letting the game come to me.”

Terrell Suggs being a huge movie fan, would love to be a part of a Hollywood ending with the Baltimore Ravens. Suggs has seen the likes of hall of famer Jonathan Odgen and future hall of famer Ray Lewis, remain ravens for life and learn the value of a legacy on one team. Suggs stated, “I’ve learned the value of the word ‘legacy,’ being on one team and in one uniform your entire career, “I don’t want to go anywhere else. This city loves me.”

As for now, Suggs says “going forward into the off-season is to hit another level, I came back in phenomenal shape last year, and I plan on coming back in phenomenal shape this year.” With the salary cap cut he took, Suggs significantly helped the ravens free up some cap space, and allowed for them to search the free agent market for some possible help on both the defensive and offensive sides of the ball.

Bottom line is this, the Baltimore Ravens took a huge step forward this off-season resigning one of the franchises greatest players. Suggs is not only a motivator on the field, but a strong locker room presence. Suggs was there when the ravens won in 2012, and he knows what it takes to get back. It will be interesting to see where the ravens go from here, but they are on the right track with making Tsizzle a raven for life.
