I posted an article on Sunday about the ten biggest storylines in the SEC the 2012 season. Recruiting made that list as a solid number five. Recruiting is a huge, huge business and more and more fans are migrating towards following the ins and outs of recruiting. As technology increases it’s easier for fans to have access to this information and the publicity for recruits is growing and growing. Let’s take a look at some of the biggest news over the 24 hours:
In The Bleachers: Paul Johnson, Scholarship Offers & Official Visits:
I am not even remotely a fan of the Paul Johnson method. Not in the slightest. Not a bit. None. I think it is an archaic policy that attempts to wrest power from the student athlete, place it in the hands of the program and force a static value on a fluid situation.
Archaic. Antiquated. Old school. No longer current. Outdated. That’s the first thing that comes to mind here. The no playsheet, relay plays in through quarterback and substitutions style is a thing of the past for Paul Johnson and so too is this recruiting hardline. This is about a power play, making your job easier and avoiding as many of the recruiting battles that other schools are engaged in up until and beyond signing day.
Sicemdawgs.com: Sheldon Dawson Commits to the Bulldogs:
Dawson (5-11, 169, 4.4) committed to the Dawgs over offers from several top schools, including Arkansas, Cincinnati, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Tennessee and Texas Tech. Dawson plays on both sides of the ball at Ridgeway but will likely line up at cornerback between the hedges.
Buckeye House Call: Buckeye Recall:
Armani Reeves, a blue-chip senior cornerback from Massachusetts, narrowed his college choices to Ohio State and Michigan last week. Both teams needed his services and conducted themselves accordingly, recruiting him heavily in recent weeks. On Sunday evening, Reeves chose the Buckeyes via Twitter.
Leftover Hot Dog: Chris Moody Commits:
The South Carolina Gamecocks football team started the week off well with landing a pledge from McDonough (Ga.) Henry County ATH Chris Moody. He has pledged to sign with South Carolina on National Signing Day rather than Vanderbilt. As our crystal bowl indicated, we felt strongly that he was going to switch from being a Vanderbilt guy to a Gamecock following his official visit over the weekend.
Saturday Blitz: UCLA’s 2012 Recruiting Class First Step in Pete Carroll-like Resurrection:
Talented two-way prep standout Devin Fuller announced on Sunday he would join Jim Mora’s already impressive first recruiting at UCLA. Fuller is a four star recruit sought out for both his quarterback and secondary play, and in signing with the Bruins, spurned previous frontrunner Rutgers and Arizona.
Aaron Torres Sports: Our Best Guess At Each Coach’s Recruiting Pitch:
Alabama: Hi, I’m Nick Saban… And…Son, I’m sorry. I’d love to shake your hand, but all these darn rings just keep getting in the way.
Arkansas: Hi I’m Bobby Petrino… And I’ll be blunt: You won’t see me smile once during your time on campus. If you play defense, I may not even bother to learn your name. But what I can promise you is that we’ll win a crap-ton of games while you’re on here. Woooo Pig-Sooie!
