Each week during the off-season we will be doing this feature that will simply be called “This Week In College Football”. We will cover the biggest news and stories of the past week and give some opinions and analysis. In addition to covering the weekly happenings we also do a weekly roundtable where we discuss varying topics and we give several opinions on each topic. THE SAGA OF MICHAEL FLOYD
One of the main reasons for optimism in Notre Dame football this year ran into a little trouble with the law a few weeks ago. Floyd was arrested and cited for drunked driving, it was the third alcohol related issue in the last three years. But it’s still possible for Floyd to return and be a factor for the Irish this year. The school has ruled that he can stay in school. Kelly says Floyd has a long way to go before he’s reinstated onto the team. Notre Dame fans I’ve talked to are conflicted. They know he’s their best chance to win football games in the fall but they also know that’s he’s been given multiple chances and has failed them in the past. It will be interesting to see what Kelly does. I think Floyd will be back on the team before the first game, but I think he should serve a pretty length suspension (which I’m not sure I see happening).
STEPHEN GARCIA: MAKING SPRING EASIER FOR US BLOGGERS
Who has made the off-season easier for writers? Jim Tressel, Stephen Garcia or the Auburn Tigers in general? It’s pretty close but right now Garcia has definitely won the last two weeks. Just two weeks ago Garcia was the lead in this very weekly column. Well Garcia messed up again and after being re-instated he has once again been suspended. It was the fifth time that Garcia has been suspended since he’s been at South Carolina. Yesterday was the South Carolina Spring Game and despite putting up decent stats anybody who watched the game with an outside perspective would tell you that it doesn’t look like any of the QBs are game ready. There is still time before they suit up for real football in the fall but Steve Spurrier knows that Garcia is his best chance to win football games this fall and re-peat as SEC East Champs and that’s why he hasn’t been booted off the team at this point.
RIVALS IS NOW A SECONDARY VIOLATION?
The Bylaw Blog broked the story earlier this week that schools and coaches can no longer subscribe to pay sites like Rivals, Scout and ESPN. It sounds like the NCAA has taken a rule already in place and has made the worst possible interpretation of it. If coaches are no longer allowed to go onto these sites to view videos of kids doesn’t it seem like the NCAA is now pushing them to use guys like Willie Lyles to provide them with recruiting info? The NCAA might have good intentions but I think this will open up a whole new can of worms. When in doubt you should always side with the lesser evil.
