Now that the Golden State Warriors have announced Mark Jackson as their new head coach, thus leaving Mike Budenholzer in San Antonio for now, a former San Antonio Spurs player is a possible candidate for an assistant coaching spot with the Warriors.
According to CBSSports.com, Mario Elie is a possible candidate among others in Golden State:
Several names have emerged as candidates for Jackson as he begins to put together his first coaching staff. Included in the list of possible assistants are former Rockets assistants Jack Sikma and Elston Turner; Kings assistant Mario Elie; and Jerry Sichting, who was on Keith Smart’s staff in Golden State.
During his time with the Spurs, Elie was a hard-nosed, no-nonsense player. He defined toughness for the Spurs’ march towards their first NBA crown in 1999. Add the fact he has some experience as a coach in Sacramento and he would be a solid pick up for Jackson and the Warriors.
Another former Spurs player, Chuck Person, met with the Los Angeles Lakers and with the Houston Rockets according to ESPN:
After meeting with new Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike Brown on consecutive days late last week to interview for an assistant coach position, Chuck Person is keeping his options open.
Person traveled to Houston on Sunday and will interview with the Rocketsfor a position on new head coach Kevin McHale’s staff on Monday, according to multiple sources.
Person would be a solid choice to join Brown in Los Angeles. He already has been in the Lakers’ system for two season and learned from Phil Jackson.
Great to see these former Spurs continuing to make their mark in the NBA.
