On Sunday night Penn State hockey officially had two players affiliated to the NHL Draft at the time the draft occurred.
Incoming commits Eamon McAdam and Mike Williamson who haven’t even played a game for Penn State Hockey will be headed towards playing professional hockey after they spend sometime in Happy Valley.
McAdam a native of Perkasie, PA which is about an hour north-west of Philadelphia is a 6’2 185 pound goalie, who was selected as the 70th overall pick by the New York Islanders. McAdam was ranked as the No. 2-rated goaltender in the NHL Central Scouting North American rankings and was the fifth goalie selected in the draft. His selection was part of the trade that sent Nino Niederreiter to the Minnesota Wild for Cal Clutterbuck and a third round pick which would turn in to McAdam. McAdam’s last year played for the Waterloo Black Hawks of the United States Hockey League where he had an alright season going 17-9-3 with an .896 save percentage and a goals against average of 3.45.
In the 6th round, the Vancouver Canucks used their 175th overall pick to draft Mike Williamson. Williamson is a native of Leduc, Alberta and is a 6’3 195-pound defenseman. Playing in the Alberta Junior Hockey League last season for the Spruce Grove Saints he put up one goal and 10 assists in 23 regular season games as well as four points in 15 playoff games. He would be playing with two other Penn State hockey commits in David Glen and Dylan Richard.
Penn State also has Max Gardiner and Patrick Koudys on their roster of players that have also been selected in the NHL Draft in the past. Gardier who will be a junior this upcoming season is a forward and a vital part to the Penn State offense was drafted in the third round in 2010 by the St.Louis Blues. Koudys has not yet played for Penn State but he was taken in the fifth round of the 2011 draft by the Washington Capitals. Last season he played in the United States Hockey League for the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
The Nittany Lions hockey team will begin their second NCAA Division 1 season against Army in their newly built Pegula Ice Arena on Oct. 11 . Last season they finished 13-14 their biggest win coming against #16 Wisconsin in a 3-2 OT victory to finish their season.
