Pittsburgh Pirates SP prospect Tyler Glasnow faced a row of quality hitters in the team’s Spring Training game against the Dominican Republic. It did not go well.
In a unique game that is still in progress as of this writing, the Pittsburgh Pirates “hosted” the Dominican Republic WBC team. Tyler Glasnow was one of the Pirates’ pitchers scheduled to get some work in against the impressive DR lineup.
It did not go well for the youngster, as he gave up five hits, six earned runs and four walks in 2.1 innings pitched.
A Truly Stacked Lineup
We should pause to express how deep the Dominican Republic’s lineup is. The club’s lineup against Tyler Glasnow featured Pirates regulars Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco in starting roles, as well as an All-Star level lineup featuring Manny Machado, Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz among others.
That is not a lineup that Tyler Glasnow will see regularly under normal circumstances, so that must inform our takeaways from his outing today. Glasnow actually worked a clean fourth inning before getting touched up in the fifth for a run.
When he came out in the sixth inning, the young right-hander immediately ran into trouble with a leadoff walk, followed by a single from Machado and two more walks to Jose Bautista and Cruz. After Marte tagged Glasnow for a two-run single, Jonathan Villar drew a walk and that was mercifully the end of Glasnow’s day.
All of the runners that Glasnow held responsibility for ended up coming around to score.
So What Does It Mean?
In short, days like this during Spring Training may not mean a heck of a lot for Tyler Glasnow. Again, this was an incredibly stacked lineup full of All-Star level hitters. As we’ve stated many times before, Spring Training results do not matter. Full Stop.
But for a starting pitcher specifically, bad habits – most often manifested in the form of control – can easily creep in to a pitcher’s mechanics and offerings. To this point, Glasnow has shown some intrigue with his newfound changeup grip and altered delivery.
An outing like today’s is more than enough to raise an eyebrow at the very least.
