Tyler Goeddel on the rise

There have been few bright spots recently for the Phillies in past 10 or so games, but a player turning heads has been Tyler Goeddel. About a month ago, Phillies fans were calling for the 23-year-old to be shipped back to Tampa Bay; now, Goeddel is quickly turning into a fan favorite amongst fans.

Phillies selected Tyler Goeddel first overall in this past year’s Rule 5 Draft from the Tampa Bay Rays organization in hopes of creating another success story like they’ve had with Odubel Herrera, Shane Victorino, and David Hollins. It wasn’t love at first sight for Goeddel and Phillies fans because there was an adjustment period for him and you don’t get used to major-league pitching overnight.

After receiving consistent playing time over the past few weeks, Goeddel is batting .308 with three home runs, five RBI’s, and a .368 on-base percentage in 15 games (15 starts). Goeddel has also showcased a cannon for an arm with three outfield assists, including two impressive throws that wound up as double plays in key situations.

It’s starting to look like the Phillies have struck gold once again in the Rule 5 Draft with Tyler Goeddel and he likely could find himself as part of the future for the rebuilding Phillies. A lot of credit has to go to the Phillies front office and their scouts for the hard work they do in evaluating players because their combined effort has the Phillies moving toward the right path to success in what many believe to be the near future.

Tyler Goeddel is out of the lineup tonight in the series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers to give the rookie a breather. Phillies fans will get a chance to see Cody Asche, just activated from the 15-day disabled list, make his season debut in left field and batting sixth in the lineup.
