UConn Football To Face Oklahoma in Tostitos Fiesta Bowl

Oklahoma Sooners vs UConn Huskies in Tostitos Fiesta Bowl

By virtue of beating the South Florida Bulls 19-16 on Saturday night, the UConn Huskies football team clinched a berth in a BCS Bowl.  And now we know who the UConn Huskies will play.

It was announced on Sunday night that the Huskies will be traveling to desert in Arizona to take on the Oklahoma Sooners in the Tosititos Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Day 2011 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ.  The game will kickoff at 8:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPN.

The Huskies finished the regular season at 8-4 (5-2 Big East) and shared the Big East title with the West Virginia Mountaineers and Pittsburgh Panthers. But because the Huskies beat both of those teams, they win the tiebreaker for the Big East’s BCS berth. This is UConn’s first-ever appearance in a BCS game.

The Sooners finished the 2010 season at 11-2 (6-2 Big 12) and shared the Big 12 South crown with Oklahoma State and Texas A&M. The Sooners won the tiebreaker by being ranked higher in the BCS Poll for the right to play in the Big 12 Championship Game against Nebraska which they won to get the Big 12’s BCS berth.

And now for the next four weeks, we get to hear how UConn doesn’t deserve a spot in a BCS game and how Oklahoma will kill them. Take it all with a grain of salt folks because we all know Randy Edsall will have his boys ready to play come game time.
