CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – University of Connecticut sophomore quarterback Bryant Shirreffs (Jefferson, Ga.) was named the weekly winner of the New England Football Writers’ Association Gold Helmet Award for his performance against Villanova last Thursday.
The weekly Gold Helmet is presented to the Division I (FBS and FCS) and II/III football players who have established himself for outstanding contributions to his team on the given week. The Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation is the sponsor of the program.
In his first career start, Shirreffs led UConn to a 20-15 win over FCS No. 4 Villanova Sept. 3. He completed 12 of 20 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns. Shirreffs tossed a 69-yard strike on the second play of the second half that setup the go-ahead touchdown for the Huskies. His 14-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter gave the Huskies the lead, while his second touchdown pass of the night sealed the game for the Huskies late in the fourth quarter.
UConn returns to action on Saturday at noon when its plays host to Army at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.
Stonehill cornerback Donovan Phanor was named the Division II/IIII winner as the Skyhawks defeated Bloomsburg 27-10.
