UConn Huskies head coach Randy Edsall had some bad news to share on the Big East Conference weekly coaches teleconference on Monday as he announced that running back Kelmetrus “Meme” Wylie is out for the season after suffering a knee injury on Saturday.
Wylie was injured covering a kickoff during the third quarter of Saturday’s win over the Buffalo Bulls. Wylie had been elevated to the No. 2 running back position for the game with the injury to Jordan Todman.
Here’s what Edsall had to say about Wylie on the call:
“I’m very disappointed and sad for Meme because he’s been a program player here and this is his fourth year here. He’s made great contributions for us on special teams and he was going to have the opportunity to get on the field as a running back, and that was all taken away from him on kickoff coverage.”
Edsall also announced that freshman linebacker Yawin Smallwood will be out for the season as he is undergoing shoulder surgery. Smallwood was expected to redshirt this season.
