STORRS, Conn. – University of Connecticut freshman Max Letunov (Moscow, Russia) has been named the Hockey Commissioners Association National Rookie of the Month for October. In addition, Letunov was tabbed the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month by Hockey East on Wednesday.
Letunov wrapped up his first month of college hockey leading the Huskies in scoring with 11 points coming on five goals and six assists. He kicked-off his collegiate career with a bang by recording a hat trick in his first game, netting three to lead UConn to a 5-2 win at Alabama Huntsville. He registered at least a point in five of the first six games of his career including four multi-point efforts.
On the power play, he has been the Huskies top-playmaker with a team-high five assists, a mark that is tied for tops in the nation. Letunov had a big Hockey East series against then No. 7 ranked Boston University, scoring the Huskies only two goals in a 4-2 loss then dishing three assists as UConn knocked off the Terriers, 5-2, at home.
Letunov currently sits sixth in the country in scoring and fifth in Hockey East. His 11 points and five goals lead all rookies in both the league and the nation. He becomes the first Husky to earn both a National Rookie of the Month and Hockey East Rookie of the Month award.
The Huskies are back in action this weekend taking on UMass in a home-and-home Hockey East series. UConn will welcome the Minutemen to the XL Center on Friday night, Nov. 6th and travel to Amherst Saturday night, Nov. 7th.
