Just like the AP Poll that came out last Friday, the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team finds themselves at the top of the ESPN/USA Today Preseason Women’s Coaches poll that came out on Tuesday for the third straight season. And just like the AP Poll, the Huskies aren’t an unanimous No. 1 selection.
It’s the first time since November of 2008, the Huskies haven’t been a unanimous No. 1 in the poll.
The Huskies received 27 of a possible 31 votes while No. 2 Baylor received two votes. Co-No. 2 Stanford also received one vote and the Tennessee Volunteers, who come in at No. 4, also received one vote. The Duke Blue Devils round out the top five.
Joining the Huskies fom the Big East are No. 11 West Virginia, No. 12 Notre Dame, No. 13 Georgetown and No. 16 St. John’s. DePaul, Louisville and Rutgers are among the teams receiving votes.
UConn’s schedule for the 2010-11 season includes ten of the teams ranked in the top 25 including five of the top ten teams.
They will play No. 2 Baylor on November 16 and also play No. 2 Stanford in Palo Alto in December as well as No. 5 Duke at Gampel Pavilion in January of 2011. They’ll play No. 7 Ohio State at Madison Square Garden in December in the Maggie Dixon Classic and will also play No. 9 Oklahoma at the XL Center on Valentine’s Day. The last non-conference team that is ranked the Huskies will play is No. 14 Florida State and that matchup comes in December after final exams at the XL Center.
The Huskies will play each of the ranked Big East teams once with the exception of Notre Dame, who they will play twice.
