In their final game before a short Christmas break, The UCONN Lady Huskies defeated the Oakland (MI) Golden Grizzlies by the final score of 85-53. Leading the way for the Huskies was Kalana Greene, who had 14 pts and a career high 13 rebounds. Brittany Hunter added 13 pts and 9 rebounds in 10 minutes before leaving the game after aggravating her right knee.
Notes and Observations:
- The starters were the usual suspects: Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, Houston and Charles.
- Kalana Greene’s 14 pts and 13 rebounds were good enough for her first career double-double.
- Tina Charles had 9 points in just 7 minutes before also leaving after re-injuring her chronic right shoulder.
- Mel Thomas had an off night as she was just 3 of 10 from the field. However, she had 10 pts and made an awesome pass to Kaili McClaren for an assist in the second half.
- Kaili McClaren scored all 9 of her points in the second half.
- Renee Montgomery was also in double figures adding 10 pts to the cause. She also had 6 assists and 5 steals.
- Still no sign of freshman Kristin Phillips anywhere. Maybe she’s pretending to be in Where’s Waldo.
- Coach Geno Auriemma is now 2 wins away from being the fastest coach to 600 in his career.
With the win, the Lady Huskies move to 9-0 on the season. Next up for the Huskies is the University of Hartford Hawks, coached by former UCONN great Jen Rizzotti, on Friday December 29th at the Hartford Civic Center.
