Ueck Returning This Weekend

April 16, 2010: Former major leaguer and current Brewers broadcaster Bob Uecker before a game against the hometown Washington Nationals at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. The Nationals beat the Brewers 5 - 3.

Some early-morning news today — the Brewers announced this morning that Bob Uecker will be returning to the broadcast booth on Friday, when the Brewers open a homestand by playing the Washington Nationals.  Ueck has been out of action since the end of April, undergoing heart surgery.

Cory Provus has proven to be more than capable as the main play-by-play guy, but having Ueck back will definitely make the last couple months easier to listen to.  And nothing against Davey Nelson, but I’m almost as happy about Davey leaving the booth as I am about Uecker returning.

It’s good to have him back, and I’m glad they didn’t rush him back before he was ready.  It stunk not having Uecker around, but recovery from heart surgery isn’t something you should rush, as any sort of complication could prove to be costly.  Tom Haudricourt reports that Uecker did have a setback with a staph infection, but it does appear that he’s returning pretty close to the timeframe he laid out when he announced he was going into surgery.

Haudricourt says he’s hearing that Uecker will ease back into action, calling only home games with hopes of returning to the road before the end of the year.  That sounds like the best plan to me — the fans get to hear Uecker again, but not at the risk of his health.

In the end, Ueck is back, and there was much rejoicing.  Nice way to start your day, isn’t it?
