The Prelim Breakout Star is a once per event article that helps fans get to know those who will be entertaining them from the undercard. The intention of the article is not to bring attention to the most talented guy on the preliminary card, but rather one that the common fan may have overlooked or underestimated.
In the 111 installments of Prelim Breakout Star, never have we covered a fighter so early in his career. We have also never covered a fighter as young as this one is. However, this fighter is not just any fighter. Tune in this weekend and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about.

What makes him impressive
Just one look at the 19 year old (that’s right, I said 19) and you’ll instantly be impressed. An absolute physical specimen at 155 lbs, he is likely to be a handful for any lightweight on that premise alone. But his skills don’t lag far behind his physical attributes. He has an incredibly impressive scooping double leg. Plus once he gets people down, he finishes – and fast. Each of his wins so far are by either TKO or a rear naked choke, although one technically went down as a neck crank. While his standup is still a little raw, he’s more than ready for his UFC debut.
Why he has been overlooked
Although the obvious statement to make here would be that he’s only 19 and has only had five fights, the fact of the matter is that he’s not being overlooked. People are already talking about how good he is. This is largely due to his showings on Legacy’s most recent fight card and Dana White’s FightPass special Searching for a Fight, which included Dana’s first impressions of him. Of course it is too early to tell, but I liken the UFC’s push of Northcutt to a male version of Paige VanZant.
What makes this a good matchup
Francisco Trevino has already had two fights in the UFC, and in those fights he’s exposed a major weakness. He was taken down four and five times respectively in those fights and holds only a 42% takedown defense percentage (per FightMetric). With Northcutt getting most of his finishes with that double leg and ground work, Trevino is going to be hard pressed to make it out of the first round.
