The first thing you think about when watching the UFC’s new DVD/Blu-Ray release, Ultimate Submissions, is that they definitely got the title right. This truly IS the ultimate in UFC submissions, covering the company’s full history, all the way back to the dark ages of UFC 1. Running almost three hours in length, Ultimate Submissions features the best of the best in MMA’s submission fighters, including Matt Hughes, Royce Gracie, Georges St-Pierre, BJ Penn, Kenny Florian and Anderson Silva, to name just a few.
Hosted by the irrepresible Mike Goldberg, Ultimate Submissions takes you through clips of some legendary matches in UFC history, including 20 full-length fights. You get to see every possible type of submission you could possible imagine, including the elusive Peruvian Necktie. But not only do you see awesome submissions, but you also get to see how much the sport has grown over the years, in terms of the participants’ skill level, the presentation of the events, the knowledge of the commentators and even the quality of the refereeing; it becomes quite apparent why the sport almost died on the vine back in the day.
So if you are looking for some new submission holds to try out on your grandma next time you visit her (don’t even try to tell me that I’m the only one who chokes out his grandma), then Ultimate Submissions is the DVD/Blu-Ray for you. And, as an added bonus to the alcoholics out there, a fun drinking game would be to take a shot every time Joe Rogan says “top-level jiu-jitsu” in the film – you’ll be feeling fine in no time.
