Uh oh, Paul Pierce likes being a Wizard

It’s fair to say that every true Celtics fan hopes that Paul Pierce will return to Boston and finish out his playing career with his original team. As one of the all-time great Celtics, the former captain remains more popular than anyone on the current roster.

Pierce no doubt knows this, because he’s showered with love every time he visits TD Garden to face his former squad. It also wasn’t lost on Paul that his bro, Kevin Garnett, was lovingly welcomed home in Minnesota after KG waived his no-trade clause this past February.

The Truth has a player option where he can choose to stay with the Washington Wizards for another season or leave and become a free agent. The latter route would allow him to re-sign with Boston – but…

Based on his comments during a recent interview, he might decide to stay in the nation’s capital for another season. Seems he enjoys playing the role of O.G. and mentor to the young and improving Wizards. He’s hitting big shots and talking trash at Larry Bird levels, and the Wizards are winning.

“It’s been nothing but love from the time I got off the airplane in the summer,” Pierce said. “I feel like even if it’s one year, two years, or three years I’m here, I feel like I’m going to have a relationship with these guys for a long, long time even after basketball. It seems like we connect, and I connected with the city.”

Welp.

And as the article also notes, even if P.P. leaves D.C., there isn’t a contender that wouldn’t welcome him.

Paul Pierce will likely come back to the Celtics at some point, but will be for a last-hurrah final season or on a one-day contract as a formality toward retirement? For now, Celtics fans should probably add this to the long list of uncertainties that will dominate the off-season.
