Tiny Archibald made short work of Bill Sharman yesterday, taking 86% of the vote. Tiny's got a big challenge. In a few days, he'll be taking on White Bracket top seed, and second overall seed, Paul Pierce.
Today's matchup is for the right to face our overall #1, Larry Bird. It pits Green Bracket 8th seed Dave Cowens (16 overall) against 9th seed Jo Jo White (17th overall).
Off we go.
(16) Dave Cowens
1-on-1 Advantage: Scoring, rebounding, defense, hustle. Cowens' motor was always revving at full speed. In the 77-78 season, he led the C's in scoring, rebounding, assists blocks and steals. He's also a 6'9" center, so he knows how to box out and rebound. Even if he doesn't get a rebound on the first try, chances are he'll keep working until he gets it.
1-on-1 Disadvantage: Speed, ball handling
Cowens won't win a ton of foot-races. He's not slow, but he's not fast enough to keep up with the fastest guys in the league. A guard with a quick first step could get a shot off against him. As a big man, Cowens will have trouble dribbling past a guard. He'll have to rely on backing down to get a good shot off.
(17) Jo Jo White
1-on-1 Advantage: Scoring, speed, defense. Jo Jo was quite the scoring point guard. A very good ball handler who had a good burst of speed, he could score from anywhere on the floor. He was also a pretty good defender who, in a 1-on-1 situation will make a player work.
1-on-1 Disadvantage: Size, strength. At 6'3", 190, Jo Jo will have trouble keeping a bigger player from backing him down. He'll have to rely on his hand speed to knock the ball away. Jo Jo was a pretty good rebounder for his size, but a bigger guy can still get over him to snatch rebounds away.
