The Sox and Rays were playing the makeup game for last Thursday's rainout. The ironic thing is that it rained more last night than it did all night on Thursday when the game was cancelled. The Sox had a rematch of Doubront vs. Price. Doubront pitched well, but Price continued to dominate the Sox lineup. The Sox should have tied the game late, but the ump botched the call and the team fell 1-2.
Doubront and Price both started off pitching well, but Doubront was the first one to crack and give up runs. Doubront gave up his first run in the 4th inning when he gave up an RBI double to Rodriguez. Sox 0-1. Doubront gave up his 2nd and final run of the game in the 5th when Myers hit a sac grounder to score Longoria. Sox 0-2. Doubront had a high pitch count and ended up only pitching 5 innings. His line for the night was 104 pitches, 5 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 3 BB and 4 Ks. It wasn't his best outing, but wasn't too shabby either. Unfortunately he was up against David Price who was once again just dealing. Price was just mowing down the Sox lineup. In the 6th inning the Sox were finally able to get on the scoreboard when Snyder hit a HR off the Pesky Pole. Sox 1-2.
The Sox bullpen was looking good last night as well. De La Torre pitched a scoreless 6th inning and started the 7th before handing the ball over to Drake Britton. Britton continued to impress on the mound since being called up. Britton finished off the 7th and pitched a scoreless 8th inning. The skies opened up after the top of the 8th and the game went into a short rain delay. Unfortunately the delay wasn't long enough to keep David Price from coming out of the game, but he wouldn't stay in long. Price didn't look crisp after the delay, so Maddon went to get Peralta to finish off the 8th. This is where the game gets interesting and frustrating. Lavarnway hit a double and Nava came out to run for him. Drew hit a no doubt double that should have scored Nava, but he stopped at 3rd. Next Snyder flied out to left and Nava tagged up and broke for him. It was close at the plate, but Nava was safe. Unfortunately the home plate ump called him out. Instead of the game being tied the Sox were still down 1-2. Rodney got into some trouble in the 9th, but ended up getting the save and the Rays got the win.
The Rays can thank the ump for the win and the 1/2 game lead in the AL East. As far as I am concerned, we are still tied and should still be playing.
Red Sox 1 Rays 2 BOXSCORE
WP: Price (6-5) LP: Doubront (7-5) SV: Rodney (26)
