Welcome to another installment of UndercarDVR, where we review what you need to see from this week in combat sports. We go fight by fight to see whether it needs to be watched, deleted, or put in fast forward.
PBC on ESPN returned with a card comprised of two showcase fights. Mario Barrios looked to continue to primp his resume against Italian journeyman Devis Boschiero, while Edgar Ramirez aimed to continue his rise as a prospect against the young but untested replacement opponent Jessie Roman.
Get your remotes ready.
Mario Barrios defeated Devis Boschiero by unanimous decision in a super featherweight bout.
- All went as expected here as Barrios was never in any real trouble cruising his way to a unanimous decision. Fights like these make it hard to gauge what trajectory someone like Barrios has at this point, especially when looking thoroughly unspectacular in a dominant fight. Boschiero probably goes back to drawing in Italy, but Barrios either getting boosted or looking flat in his next couple will be a more clear determination of what he has.
- The less said about this the better, honestly. Nothing was ever in question here and Barrios picked at Boschiero minimally while keeping him away. You have a much better fight to look forward to Monday anyway. Verdict: Delete.
Eddie Ramirez defeated Jessie Roman by unanimous decision in a welterweight bout.
- Roman fought admirably for a late-notice opponent here and made a fight of it while still being clearly swimming too far into the deep end against Ramirez. Ramirez wore down Roman and capitalized late in the fight to add the exclamation point on the decision. Ramirez has some real potential at 24 and having fought some decent veterans, while Roman will likely be a feeder to up-and-coming talents or champions in need of a booster win.
- While Roman performed pretty well for someone on late-notice, the talent gap was pretty wide here and it didn’t bring much of a great performance from Ramirez. Not bad, but completely forgettable. Verdict: Delete.
